"Making fireworks is the biggest industry in the Portuguese territory, of Macao, which adjoins Communist China near Hong Kong. The fireworks are shipped all over the world. Seated at low tables in the streets and alleys, thousands of children roll numerous containers for the gunpowder. They are paid a few pence for every 1000 cartridges. Their nimble fingers roll them in a flash and gum down the ends. These children often support the rest of the family with rice from the pittances they earn."
