"40 miles by steamer from Hong Kong and 88 miles from Canton, is Macao, Portuguese colony, oldest European settlement in China and today somnolent as a trading center, but notorious as a gambling resort. (...) Probably, no city in the Orient is more historically interesting, from the standpoint of early Sino-European commercial intercourse, than is Macao. (...) The city is beautifully situated on the side of a hill, with rich farmlands rolling behing it, and splendid seas on three sides."
