"Portugal não é um país pequeno"

Nos tempos em que se apregoava o "império colonial português" a mensagem que se pretendia passar para o mundo era simples: "Portugal não é um país pequeno"... e em várias línguas. Ao todo, entre o Portugal continental e as colónias, a superfície do império era superior à da Espanha, França, Inglaterra, Itália e Alemanha, todas juntas! Mais de 2 milhões de quilómetros quadrados. Para o efeito Macau 'contribuia' com pouco mais de uma dezena (14).

O cartaz “Portugal Não É um País Pequeno” é de 1934 e é porventura  uma das imagens marcantes do período da propaganda mais ideológica e mais combativa do Estado Novo em Portugal. A autoria é de Henrique Galvão - mais tarde tornar-se-ia um forte opositor ao salazarismo - que organizou a 1ª Exposição Colonial que teve lugar no Porto nesse ano quando foi editada a brochura No Rumo do Império onde o mapa servia de ilustração. Este mapa foi produzido em vários formatos - cartaz, postal ,etc... - e chegou a estar exposto em todas as escolas do país.

Para além do português, o cartaz teve versões em francês - “Portugal n’est pas un petit pays” - e em inglês - “Portugal is not a small country”, da responsabilidade do SPN: Secretariado de Propaganda Nacional.

António Salazar became the Prime Minister of Portugal's dictatorship in 1932 and in 1933hHe founded the authoritarian Estado Novo presiding over Portugal until 1974. The Salazar regime was focused from the outset on the "greatness" of Portugal and the significance of the Portugese Empire. One of its first initiatives was the First Colonial Portuguese Exhibition (I Exposição Colonial Portuguesa), held in Porto in 1934.

A brochure entitled No Rumo do Império (The Course of Empire) was published to illustrate the exhibition, and the map above was the heart of the brochure. The exhibition was directed, and the map was produced, by Henrique Galvão, an army officer "very active in the colonial administration and colonial propaganda". The map shows the colonies of Portugal overlaid on a map of non-Portugese Europe and is entitled “Portugal is not a small country” (Portugal não é um pais pequeno). In the unlikely case that the image alone were insufficient, data on the map shows that Portugal with its colonies (principally Angola and Mozambique) was larger than the total area of Spain, France, England, Italy and Germany combined.
This map was produced not only in the Exhibition brochure, but in a number of other forms and formats over the years. Versions were published not only in Portuguese (aimed at strengthening internal support for the state) but also in other languages (aimed at visitors to Portugal).
