Macao in 1924

At Macao where conditions and prospects largely affect the current of trade which flows through our stations unmistakable signs of renewed activity were manifest, says Mr E Lebas, Commissioner of Custons for Lappa in his 1924 Report.

Work on the development scheme which is to provide a deep water harbour was pushed on energetically: the channel leading to the open sea is already dredged to a length of 3,200 metres with a width varying from 100 to 180 metres and a depth of 13 feet at low water of spring tides; construction of the eastern breakwater 1,200 metres long and for the foundations of which 360,000 tons of stone have been used is proceeding apace; much reclamation work has been accomplished or is in progress and the new industrial harbour near the present inner harbour is practically completed with four docks which all afford excellent typhoon anchorage.

A powerful wireless telegraph and telephone station, the largest of its kind in the Orient, was opened in July and will later on be linked with stations at Manila and elsewhere.

The Banco Nacional Ultramarino is erecting handsome new premises and building activity generally has been most marked.

Motorcars have increased in numbers and a rapid and regular motor bus service connecting all parts to the territory was started at the end of the year, whilst a new hotel and a race course are also in contemplation, with good prospects of realisation.

Macao's total population which in 1920 was given as 145,141 is now reckoned at 190,306.

Em Macau, onde as condições e perspectivas afectam largamente o comércio que flui através das nossas estações, manifestam-se sinais inconfundíveis de actividade renovada, diz o Sr. E Lebas, Comissário da Alfândega da Lapa no seu Relatório de 1924.

As obras do projeto de urbanização que prevê um porto de águas profundas sofreram um forte impulso: o canal que liga ao mar já está dragado ao longo de 3.200 metros de extensão, com largura variando de 100 a 180 metros e a profundidade de 13 pés na maré baixa; a construção do quebra-mar leste, com 1.200 metros de comprimento e em cujas fundações das foram usadas 360.000 toneladas de pedra está a avançara em ritmo acelerado; muito trabalho de recuperação foi realizado ou está em andamento e o novo porto industrial perto do actual porto interior está praticamente concluído com quatro docas que oferecem excelentes ancoradouros em caso de tufão.

Uma potente estação de telégrafo e telefone sem fio, a maior do género no Oriente, foi inaugurada em Julho e mais tarde será ligada a outras estações em Manila e outros locais.

O Banco Nacional Ultramarino está a construir belas e novas instalações (nova sede) e a atividade de construção em geral está em frança expansão.

O número de automóveis aumentou e no final do ano iniciou-se um serviço rápido e regular de autocarros ligando todas as zonas ao território, estando também em estudo um novo hotel  (seria o President/Central) e um hipódromo, ambos com boas perspetivas de concretização.

A população total de Macau, que em 1920 era de 145.141, é agora estimada em 190.306.
