"Macao, the tarnished jewel of the East"

"Portugal Antigo na Nova China - Macau, a jóia manchada do Oriente"* é o título da crónica assinada por Robert Bruce - que visitou o território em Dezembro de 1936 - e publicada na edição de 16.10.1937 do jornal The Glasgow Herald.

* O termo 'manchada' refere-se ao vício do jogo: 

"There is a rare, quiet decadence about Macao. It has become a meeting-place for gamblers. Rich chinese merchant from Canton and Hong Kong and office-weary Europeans crowd the tables at the week-ends. From the tables you go to the dance halls. These dance places in Macao have not the purposive, efficiently vulgar splendour oh those in shanghai, nor have the noisy American sialors and elegant Russian 'princesses.' They are more like, Macao itself, familiar and intimate and rather tired."
