Escrita em Macau a 25 de Agosto de 1849 esta carta é assinada por David Geisinger (1790-1860) comandante da esquadra naval dos EUA na Índia Oriental entre 1848 e 1850. É uma resposta a um pedido de apoio do Conselho do Governo de Macau após o assassinato do governador Ferreira do Amaral poucos dias antes (dia 22).

"I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your two communications…one apprizing me of the intention of the Council of the Government to occupy the Barrier with a Portuguese force; and the other, stating that the force sent for that purpose has been fired on, and calling on me for assistance from the Force under my Command to repel the aggression of the Chinese. I will be most happy to render…any aid, or service, consistent with my position as Commander of the Force of a Neutral Power, or that may become necessary for the defense and protection of American Citizens residing here…"
