During the first half of the 1950s, my father served in the U.S. Air Force and for part of that time was based in Asia, primarily on Okinawa. He had the opportunity to travel around much of the region and these photos (with a few exceptions that include him) are ones he took of the places he visited: villages on Okinawa along with Hong Kong, Manila and Macau.

What I personally find most interesting about these photos is that very few of them have anything to do with the military: they are of the places he saw and the people he met while being half-a-world from home. While my Dad returned home and become a successful dentist, I have no doubt that he had both the eye and the spirit to have been a great photographer.

These photos were taken while my Dad served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. They were taken with a Zeiss Ikon Contessa, a rangefinder with a folding Tessar f2.8/45mm lens, and were shot on 35mm Kodachrome transparency film. I recently had about 70 out of nearly 1,000 slides he shot scanned by ScanCafe in order to preserve as well as share on Flickr.

Most of the photos I'm posting to Flickr were taken over a one year period, between September 1953 and August 1954. The caption for each photo is simply what my Dad noted on each slide.
