Uma edição do Chinese Repository de 1831 refere que Macau tem 12 igrejas católicas, quatro ou cinco capelas e cerca de 35 padres europeus:
"Macao possessed twelve Romish Churches four or five Chapels and about 35 European priests."

"The Roman Catholic churches in this city are numerous and some are magnificent specimens of architecture; the finest edifice among them was the Jesuits church or cathedral which was destroyed by fire some few years ago. (...) Besides numerous churches there are three monasteries, a convent, a college for the instruction of the Portuguese or proselytes from the Chinese nation who profess to have embraced the Roman Catholic religion. (...)"

"As igrejas católicas romanas nesta cidade são numerosas e algumas são magníficos exemplares de arquitectura; o melhor edifício foi a igreja ou catedral dos jesuítas, destruída por um incêndio há alguns anos. (...) Além de inúmeras igrejas, há três mosteiros, um convento, um colégio para a instrução dos portugueses ou prosélitos da nação chinesa que professam ter abraçado a religião católica romana. (...)"
