Macau visto por um estrangeiro em 1836: parte II

Macao possesses very few things which can interest a stranger after the novelty of seeing so remote a place has worn off . You are interested at first by walking up and down the narrow alleys where every thing and every body is different from what you have been accustomed to but you soon tire of that and find it impossible to extend the sphere of your amusements. The markets attract your attention with the great variety of fruits and vegetables exposed for sale for the Chinese are not surpassed by any nation in the cultivation of their gardens. There are no shops here as in Canton with those ingenious wonderful productions of minute art which belong almost exclusively to China and in the examination of which the greater part of the time is occupied by those who visit that place. No theatre or exhibition of any kind is in the town at this time of the year so that you soon feel thrown upon your own resources for mental occupation. One thing worth seeing however is the menagerie or zoological garden as we should name it of Mr Beale. Not having seen it I can give no description but I was told that there were among other curiosities some Birds of Paradise alive. (...)

Macau possui muito poucas coisas que possam interessar a um estranho depois de esgotada a novidade de ver um lugar tão remoto. No início anda-se para cima e para baixo nas vielas estreitas onde cada coisa e cada corpo é diferente do que estamos acostumados, mas logo nos cansamos disso e torna-se impossível alargar a oferta de diversões. Os mercados atraem a nossa atenção com a grande variedade de frutas e verduras expostas à venda, pois os chineses não são superados por nenhuma nação no cultivo de suas hortas. Não há lojas aqui como em Cantão, com aquelas engenhosas e maravilhosas produções de arte minuciosa que pertencem quase exclusivamente à China e em cujo exame a maior parte do tempo é ocupada por aqueles que visitam aquele lugar. Nenhum teatro ou exposição de qualquer tipo há na cidade nesta época do ano (...). Uma coisa que vale a pena ver, no entanto, é o zoológico ou jardim zoológico (de facto era um aviário) como devemos chamá-lo do Sr. Beale. Não tendo visto não posso fazer uma descrição, mas disseram.se que havia entre outras curiosidades algumas Aves do Paraíso vivas. (...)

The only foreign painter in China resides in this town Mr Chinnery a native of the sister isle. He is very much esteemed by the Europeans who visit this part of the world and is well known to stand high in his profession. His portraits of the Chinese are often sent over to this country where they may generally be seen at the yearly exhibitions of the academy. This gentleman is deserving perhaps of more particular notice as through his means these bigoted people are beginning to have a relish for the higher excellences of this noble art. Many of the Chinese have sat to him already, one or two have been his pupils and have made a very fair progress. The best of them Lamquoi (Lamqua) is in practice as a portrait painter in Canton and is always happy to take your likeness for the small consideration of twenty dollars. (...)

O único pintor estrangeiro na China reside nesta cidade, o Sr. Chinnery, natural da ilha irmã. (Inglaterra). Ele é muito estimado pelos europeus que visitam esta parte do mundo e é conhecido por se destacar na sua profissão. Seus retratos dos chineses são frequentemente enviados para Inglaterra, onde geralmente podem ser vistos nas exposições anuais da academia. Este cavalheiro talvez mereça uma atenção especial, pois através de seus meios as pessoas intolerantes passaram a gosta das excelências mais altas desta nobre arte. Muitos dos chineses já posaram para ele, um ou dois foram seus alunos e fizeram um progresso muito bom. O melhor deles Lamquoi (Lamqua) está praticando como pintor de retratos em Cantão e fica feliz em pintar um retrato a troco de apenas vinte dólares. (...)

The communication between the two cities of Macao and Canton is kept up by means of small schooners belonging to the firm of Standford and Marks of the latter place. They are very pretty fast sailing vessels, from five to ten tons, in burden manned with Lascars. They run at stated intervals down the Canton river through the Bocca Tigris with passengers and parcels. The despatches are sent up usually by a fast boat through the Broadway river a small stream which passes almost direct from behind Macao and unites with the larger one to the westward of the other city. In due accordance with the jealous nature of the native government this short cut is kept entirely to themselves and no foreigner can proceed by it however pressing his affairs. Having the pilot and his chop ready a little egy boat carried me on board our small craft about six o clock in the afternoon. Before starting I had to make my appearance before the chief mandarin to pay a port custom of two dollars for having landed at the place. (...)

A comunicação entre as cidades de Macau e Cantão é mantida por meio de pequenas escunas pertencentes à firma de Standford e Marks deste último lugar. São veleiros muito rápidos, de cinco a dez toneladas, em carga tripulada com Lascars (marinheiros de origem indiana). Eles percorrem em intervalos determinados pelo rio Cantão com passageiros e encomendas. Os despachos são enviados geralmente por um barco rápido através do rio Broadway, um pequeno riacho que passa quase directo por trás de Macau e se une ao maior a oeste da outra cidade. De acordo com a natureza ciumenta do governo nativo, esse atalho é mantido inteiramente para si e nenhum estrangeiro pode usá-lo, por mais urgentes que sejam seus negócios. Com o piloto pronto, um pequeno tancar levou-se a bordo de nossa pequena embarcação por volta das seis horas da tarde. Antes de partir tive de comparecer perante o mandarim chefe para pagar na alfândega uma taxa de dois dólares por ali ter ter desembarcado. (...)

When the Canton merchants arrive at Macao the appearance of that place is completely altered. A gay and lively season ensues and is continued from that time until a return to the Provincial City is allowed .Those who have resided at the place at this part of the year say that the town is then highly attractive. The Carnival is held by the Portuguese with more than the usual sumptuousness of Catholic ceremonies and rice Christians a terni which has very properly been applied to those natives who are converted only during such time as they are living upon the charitable donations of the priests flock in more than ordinary numbers to the churches Balls routs and masquerades are also given by the gentry and public concerts are occasionally held. During the residence of the Superintendents of British Trade at Macao these gaieties were of course carried to the greatest height and lately when Her Majesty's commission was there before Captain Elliot went up to Canton English plays were performed by amateurs. Quando os mercadores do Cantão chegam a Macau, a vida na cidade altera-se completamente. Segue-se uma época alegre e animada e continua a partir desse momento até que regresse a normalidade de uma cidade provincial. Quem já viveu cá nesta altura do ano diz que a cidade é então altamente atraente. O Carnaval é celebrado pelos portugueses com mais do que a habitual suntuosidade das cerimónias católicas (...) Bailes e bailes de máscaras também são dados pela nobreza e concertos públicos são ocasionalmente realizados. Durante a residência dos Superintendentes do Comércio Britânico em Macau, estas alegrias foram naturalmente levadas ao máximo e, ultimamente, quando a comissão de Sua Majestade estava lá, antes do Capitão Elliot subir ao Cantão, as peças  de teatro inglês eram interpretadas por amadores.
