"Macao, a Mediterranean Town in China": 1900
"Macao, which, as it's name implies, is a Portuguese settlement, derives interest just now from the fact it is one of the principal homes of the reformer element in China. The town itself is stuated on a peninsula on the island of the same name at the mouth of the Canton River, and is in the province of Kwantung. As far back as the latter half of the sistennth century Macao was granted to the Portuguese by a Chinese emperor in return for assistance against pirates, and at the present day the town is divided into two distinct sections, the Chinese and the Portuguese. (...) The most important section of this trade consists in smuggling of rice, tea, silk, sugar and indigo. In fact, Macao without smuggling would wither up as a tree shorn of its roots."
