It is said to be a lovely city

An excursion that is often made either from Canton or Hong Kong is to Macao, which is situated on the west shores of the estuary of the Great Canton River.

This is now Portuguese territory, and is especially interesting as being the pioneer settlement of the Far East. In the 16th century, the Portuguese were the most enterprising maritime and trading nation, and were the first to sail the Eastern Seas, as well as being the first to open up commercial relations between Europe and the Chinese Empire.

It is the Mecca of the Portuguese in the East, although densely populated by Chinese. It is said to be a lovely city.

There is a beautiful promenade, also public gardens, and military barracks, and some fine hotels. The place too is well fortified. Some of our passengers were most enthusiastic about its beauties, and referred specially to the unenviable notoriety that it possesses in connection with its gambling houses, in which fan tan has its principal abiding places. These houses are licensed, and an enormous revenue is produced therefrom. Hong Kong people support these freely, as gambling is strictly prohibited amongst the Chinese in Hong Kong. (...)

"Uma excursão que costuma ser feita de Cantão ou Hong Kong é para Macau, que está situada na margem oeste do estuário do Grande Rio de Cantão.

É agora território português, e é especialmente interessante por ser o povoamento pioneiro do Extremo Oriente. No século XVI, os portugueses foram a nação marítima e comercial mais empreendedora e foram os primeiros a navegar nos mares orientais, além de terem sido os primeiros a abrir relações comerciais entre a Europa e o Império Chinês.

É a Meca dos portugueses no Oriente, embora densamente povoada por chineses. Dizem que é uma cidade encantadora.

Há um belo passeio na orla da baía, também jardins públicos, quartéis militares e alguns bons hotéis. O local também é bem fortificado. Alguns dos nossos passageiros ficaram muito entusiasmados com as suas belezas, e referiram-se especialmente à notoriedade nada invejável que possui em relação às suas casas de jogo, nas quais o fantan se destaca. Essas casas são licenciadas e uma receita de impostos enorme é produzida a partir delas. O povo de Hong Kong é um grande adepto, já que o jogo é estritamente proibido entre os chineses em Hong Kong.
