Notícia sobre "Vapores" a 13 de Janeiro de 1866

"Apropos of steamers, the first month of existence of the new Canton River Steam Company Limited has passed and both directors and shareholders appear to be well satisfied with the results of the undertaking. The company has a daily steamer to both Canton and Macao, the only opposition being that of the Plymouth Rock, the unwieldy steamer under Messrs Russell and Co's flag, and, owing to the adroitness with which nearly the entire trading community was induced to invest in its shares overwhelming proportion of the traffic falls to the share of the company's boats. The permission of the Chinese authorities at Canton has just been obtained for the erection of a wharf for the company's vessels in front of the Old Factory site, that melancholy expanse of ruin which remains as a striking memento of days gone by. In my next letter I will endeavour to give you a picture of this desolate site of former prosperity and of its younger sister the Shameen Settlement.
