A Curious Fact About Macao
In the Senate House at Macao, which is built of granite and two stories high, are several columns of the same material with Chinese characters cut into them signifying a solemn cession of the place from the Emperor of China. This solid monument is however an insufficient guard against the encroachments of its Chinese neighbours & c Staunton's Embassy to China vol 3 page 437 London MDCCXCVII. Can any of my compatriots furnish me with the exact Chinese characters of the above mentioned inscription Historiographer."

O excerto acima foi publicado em 1881 no The China Review que nesse mesmo publicou uma resposta assinada por H. L. D.

"With reference to Historiographer's query in the last number of the Review p 139 as to the inscription mentioned by Staunton I would suggest that probably Staunton referred to the conventional pact dated the 14th year of Keenlung 1749 which is said by Ljungstedt to have been engraved on a stone tablet in the Senate House at Macao. Historiographer will find a translation of the Twelve articles in Chinese in Appendix VIII to Ljungstedt's Macao. H.L.D.
